Over the past several months, you may have found yourself wondering whether you should look into seeing a Functional Medicine Practitioner… or maybe you’ve been wondering how a practitioner like me helps a woman like you...
For most, once you learn about Functional Medicine, it doesn’t take long to realize that it primarily appeals to women. Why? Well, chronic disorders affect more women than men, and the conventional medical approach to treatment, for us ladies, often ranges from disappointing to dehumanizing.
THE FACT IS: Conventional medicine is failing women.
Most of the time, when women show up at doctors’ offices with “mystery” symptoms from undiagnosed chronic disorders or functional imbalances, they are frequently left feeling demoralized and hopeless. I get it, because I’ve been there.
So many women that I’ve worked with have been told that their “mystery” symptoms are just psychosomatic (in their head!) or even “whining”. Autoimmune disease, for example, overwhelmingly affects more women than men and can cause years, or even decades, of symptoms before a diagnosis is made. Many women are told to “exercise more”... or “try to meditate”... or “have you tried this new antidepressant?”... but, they’re never given a real solution.
Heard of chronic fatigue? Well, it affects four times as many women as men. However, I’ve had women tell me that their doctors told them get off their butt and exercise - the thing is, many doctors don’t believe that it exists, even though it is now medically recognized. As you can imagine, these women often end up feeling worse.
Dismissed pain? Studies have shown that ER doctors are slower to treat pain in female patients, and general practitioners tend to under-treat women for pain due to the belief that childbirth makes women more resilient to it. What?!
You may have also heard of fibromyalgia, a disorder of chronic pain that also affects mostly women, which is often a disregarded condition, as well.
What about heart disease? Women tend to have worse outcomes from heart attacks, because conventional medicine typically only looks for male-based heart symptoms. For instance, many women don’t have chest pain. As a result, women end up under-treated.
What about childbirth? If there is one place where many women lose their faith in conventional medicine, it’s during a hospital childbirth. Women are often pressured into unnecessary procedures, or left hung out to dry emotionally, in the event of a problem or emergency. As a result, many end up leaving the hospital with postpartum PTSD. Female sexual abuse survivors also experience worse outcomes in hospital childbirth scenarios.
Male-based studies don’t translate to female patients. Most medical models are based on male physiology. As a result, many signs and symptoms that present differently in women go misdiagnosed or dismissed. Autism and heart attacks are two primary examples.
In addition, women experience chronic diseases such as autoimmunity, fibromyalgia, and hypothyroidism at significantly higher rates than men, and are often told their symptoms are “in their head”.
